Try Bowls

Open Days

Never played bowls before?  That’s exactly why you should come and visit us.

You don’t need any experience.  You don’t need your own equipment.  You don’t even need to know the rules.  All you need is a couple of hours and a willingness to give something new a go – we’ll take care of everything else.

It’s more skilful than it looks, more social than you’d expect, and a lot more fun that you might imagine.  People of all ages play it and most of them wish they’d started sooner.

During May every Saturday at 10 am and Monday evening at 6pm we welcome new bowlers to give it a ‘try’.

Facilities

At Holtwhites Bowls Club we have our own clubhouse with a spacious lounge, a kitchen, toilets and a drinks bar.  There are both male and female changing rooms.

We are also part of Holtwhites Sports & Social Club so as members of the bowls club you can join any of the other areas for a reduced fee.  The main club is just adjacent to the Bowls club, and we overlook the cricket pitch.  Their Sports bar is open to the Bowls club, and they arrange regular social events.  We have the use of the car park situated by the entrance to the club.

Bowls Coaching

Instructions are given to new bowlers on the rules of the game and the etiquette.  As a bowler becomes more proficient it is suggested that they have a few sessions with our more experienced players.

Equipment

For the Beginner

If you’re new to bowls, in the early stages you won’t have to buy a set of bowls as the club can provide bowls for any taster sessions in which you might participate. Bowls can be used on a short-term basis until you wish to purchase your own set.   The only necessary pre-requisite is that you wear a pair of flat soled shoes.

Other equipment you may want to purchase as you progress

Bowls
Each set of bowls has 4 identical bowls. They come in a range of colours and sizes to suit you. Bowls are produced by a number of manufacturers so there is plenty of choice. Other than size and colour the main difference between different models of bowls is the bias.

Shoes
There is a wide range of bowls shoes available in many colours, which are designed to protect the bowling surface. The main feature of these shoes is the flat sole with minimal grip and no heel.

Bowls Carrier
A bowls carrier is a good thing to have. These come in many different models and are an easy way to carry your bowls.

Spray Chalk
The chalk is used to mark a bowl that has touched the jack.

Measure
The measure is used to decide which bowl is closest to the jack.

Wedges
Wedges are used to support a bowl during the measuring process.
